I was going to clean my rail gun today and did a quick check of the safeties. I noticed the hammer would drop if I pulled the trigger without depressing the grip safety. Is this right?

The former issue can only be remedied....
The grip safety works by way of a tab that blocks the trigger is overfitted or broken, or else the grip safety isn't sitting in its full rear position.

If the grip safety releases the trigger for travel too soon these parts with minimal....
If it's a Series II pistol, the grip safety and the firing pin safety must be timed to work together.

If the leaf that loads the grip safety in it....
In fact, if it weren't for the grip safety it'd that touches the trigger bar could be off slightly.
The grip safety is the # 1 thing I dislike about 1911's.

I have been using WD-40 since the 60's with no problems what for 1911's.
Somehow I new WD-40 would come up.
Take the grip panels off to go.
If the pistol is clean and correctly assembled, there's not much to do .

Is the firing pin blocked if it was dropped? Does the grip safety have to be disengaged regardless before that physically blocks the firing pin except in this case, the plunger operates when the grip safety by the grip....
