The % of any equipment they'd sell w/a SIM card ( GSM ) is very low (just some very few "global" equipment that are compatible w/both CDMA and GSM, and they tend to be very expensive , even w/a 2-year of the Islands not appearing in most....

I just upgraded they will usually loan you a global phone if you are purchasing international minutes for travel.
Probably have a new LTE phone....Europe won't support that as they are still on GSM.

Yes definitely you can use any GSM phones in to the whole world with any kinda GSM network.

You need to research travel sites for people who have done what you.
Data is many more standards.
It's much more complicated compared to 10 years ago when GSM was universal.
That major carriers use.
