I travel almost 5 months out of the year and want to get an iPad 3. I'm a bit confused though. I use Verizon when I'm home and know that I can get an iPad from them.

I just upgraded they will usually loan you a global phone if you are purchasing international minutes for travel.
Probably have a new LTE phone....Europe won't support that as they are still on GSM.

You need to research travel sites for people who have done what you.
Data is many more standards.
It's much more complicated compared to 10 years ago when GSM was universal.
That major carriers use.
