I'll try and keep to the bones of the matter:
Ltd Company with 5 Directors, all equal shareholders
3 Directors resigned in 2005
2 remaining directors carried on business.
Early 2006 took out a bank loan for 20k on 5 yr term. Both directors signed as guarantors...

Should not have offered a loan to a ltd co they knew full well was insolvent - depends what because the bank mandate needed two signatures does not mean that the loan needed two gurantors
should not have used some small credit amounts....

Your wallet is relatively indifferent to the loan type, since the interest rates are about the same.
First, don't think about a 401k loan as "paying interest to yourself," since that leads.
