I don't know how well-known he was outside of Canada, but Jeff Healey was a major figure in blues/rock and, more recently, jazz. Cancer took away his eyes when he was one year old. On March 2, 2008, lung cancer took away his life. He was 41 years old....

He had a strong following.
Early jazz of seeing Jeff two years in a row when See the Light was released.
Besides being a great rock/blues guitarist Jeff was also a accomplished cornet player.

I remember a pretty fair guitar player named Jeff Healey who played Squier Strats on occasion. I don't remember anyone saying HE sounded bad.
