The insurance companies and big pharmaceutical companies, etc, single-tier health-care system is far less expensive to run than thousands of independent insurance.
In America wants free health care.
My current insurance (which does cover a bit of maternity stuff but it's not a great plan) runs out the end of May. It's actually my student insurance which I've been on the last couple years but this is it, it can't be renewed again since I'm not a student...
