Is the drain valve on a hot water heater strong enough to hook piping up to? On my old hot water heater, I busted out the old drain and put in copper (well, a dielectric coupling and then copper). That was no big deal on my old heater as it was long past...

There that will give you more strength to tie into I know, that's what I did to my old heater but it was a major pain it may only pay enough to replace the drain valve I had an electric DHW heater with an 8 year to replace the drain valve....

Yeah, there's a vacuum operated valve in line with one of the heater hoses to the heater core and into the heater core.
