The reason why both of your heater core hoses were very hot it is because IS300 and IS200 does not have a bypass valve or anything else that controls coolant flow in the core. heater core is directly connected...

Based on response, doesn't look like my hot water heat system will go anywhere with that DHW kit for Vanagon Westys and....
Components but probably $350 for the heater, $50 for the shower unit on the side of the van, $30 the engineering job.
