Is the drain valve on a hot water heater strong enough to hook piping up to? On my old hot water heater, I busted out the old drain and put in copper (well, a dielectric coupling and then copper). That was no big deal on my old heater as it was long past...

I bought this house just over a year ago- the hot water heater is only 2 years old, but apparently it's a cheap one- 40 gallon Hotpoint with a single 3500 watt element. Thursday night, we had a thunderstorm, and the next morning the water heater quit....

My in-laws have a older home and have noticed that it seems that water is running when everything if off. Went out to the meter and the triangle signal is spinning when not water in the house is being used. There is no leak that is noticeable, at least...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the small point-of-use tankless heaters. The ones I'm familiar with are made by Eemax ( http://www.eemaxinc.com/ ). I don't know if they have gas models.

You may want to install the Water Heater by-pass valve if you don't.
