I am able to write comedy very well (or at least I am convinced that I can), but whenever I try to write about more serious topics I am never able to do so convincingly. At my very best, I am able to communicate serious messages through the guise of comedy...

I suggest you join a writers group; on line or one in your community .
One problem is that you have more confidence in comedy, then you do in serious work.
