Plus I think the upgrade wouldn't overwrite....
Can't find a source, but it would be really (yes really) stupid if they would make it incompatible with your files recorded with Vista, since that would make it a showstopper for people upgrading their Media Center .

It probably has an OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium which has a serial number that is not compatible with the retail versions of Windows 7 Home Premium.

That should include the RC (there was no RC2) of Windows 7 .
But Vista and Windows 7 must have the upgrade started from within a working version of Windows .
XP asked for the previous version CD (and so did many earlier versions of Windows) .

I have a Netbook with Windows XP Home. Processor is an Atom N280 (1.66 GHz) with 2 GB of RAM. I noticed that newer Netbooks come with Windows 7, but as Starter Edition (which kinda sucks).
I wonder if there is a technical reason for using Windows 7 Starter...

I think there would have been no problem doing this even if you had activated the OS by explaining the position... .
I think the best thing to do would be to delete the OS from the old Drive by boot time reformatting and clean installing it on the new HDD .
