I'm considering a career in DH but I'm a bit hesitant about it being such female dominated field. Is there a stigma against male hygienists? Are the prospects for hiring them any different than for females? I'd appreciate any feedback on this.

I see a lot of negativity in these forums. A lot of people are trying to convince everyone else not to get into the dental hygiene field due to oversaturation. If you are interested in something, such as hygiene, and feel this is your passion, your choice...

Hygienists in Colorado are legally allowed to open their own practice, as well as contracting with dentists to refer patients to. I'm not sure about California, but it wouldn't surprise me if that state is headed in that direction. The east coast is slow...
