I don’t think there is a public interface to these controls, you’d probably have to code them yourself .

A Kindle Fire or an iPhone 4S? Option 1: Get an iPhone 4S and no Kindle Fire...but i can use my phone as an e-book and read books from amazon still.
Option 2: Buy a Kindle Fire and get a cheap phone. But Kindle Fire has internet and apps and it'll fit...

There, and then its not costing me data when I read the book? (apart from it talking to the kindle" signal) but all I do is sync it to the furthest read page, which may have been on the kindle at home.

Yes, you can read PDFs on the Kindle.
This includes-on to the core features of the Kindle.
The Kindle just shows up as USB mass storage, so you can dump any files you want on it.

Can you drop files into the kindle app on Iphone?
The reason I ask is that DH uses it on his android whilst commuting, and has hundreds of books on the PC which he just clicks and drags onto the Kindle App.

No, I don't think the Kindle iphone app can open anything that isn't sync'd though Amazon, I suspected as much as The iphone seems to be pretty much a closed system.
