Since all the music sold through iTunes store is drm free nowadays, why does Apple still use encrypted file structure on iPod? So we can't manually put in music without iTunes?
I'm a Mac user but a friend of mine who uses Linux cannot buy an iPod simply...

I recently had a panic when a friend was burgled and thought about encrpting my data better. My machine is password protected, but is that enough?
Is it possible to encrypt just a part of the hard drive...

Like someone has physical control over your computer, pretty much all bets are off unless you either encrypt your entire drive or ....
Otherwise, they won't be.
That if you encrypt the entire drive, then caches will be encrypted too.
