The shuffle is certainly your cheapest functionality than what the shuffle offered, maybe a Nano or iPod Touch is in order? You could always consider digital music....

As my 4th Ipod shuffle just died for no reason and is beyond the warranty I'm looking for a good cheap alternative. I really liked the clip on ability of the 2nd gen. shuffle.
Are there any good, reasonably priced alternatives?

When i sync an ipod shuffle, can I make it so the "Play in order" setting is by artist?
What will the order be? I have never owned or used a shuffle and I'm really thinking about getting one!
If the order is by song alphabetical and not by artist I won...

I have my main playlist sort by artists, alphabetically.
Just set it in iTunes then sync it to your iPod.
If what slix said is true, i can make a playlist lets say callled "ipod shuffle music" and set count, whatever.

I just updated to the latest iTunes and to my surprise, my iPod Shuffle now displays last time played under and updated play count (Devices > Shuffle > Music). However, the my main music library is not updated.
It seems pointless to me to update...

If I remember correctly updating library will ....
The iPod shuffle contents are not read by iTunes.
It only gets the contents of a playlist pushed to the iPod.
The iPod shuffle syncs differently than other iPods.
