I would like to upgrade some of the music I purchased on iTunes a few years ago to be DRM free.
I'm even prepared to do this the legal way, but when I go to the app store there is no link in the Quick Links to Upgrade my library.
Also none of the music...

So, when you do purchase a song that is DRM free, you will see the "Upgrade My Library" link in iTunes..
So songs on iTunes.
This is where you upgrade.
When I log in, on the right side of the itms, it says itunes plus.

It appears that iTunes match on my computer library is missing a bunch of lyrics (like 15-20%) that I had embedded in my files prior to turning iTunes Match on and subsequently updating my library with higher quality versions of songs. It has NOT haapened...

If you remove those media....
iTunes uses references in the library file to find where the actual media files are located.
Dragging the iTunes folder to an external was okay, but you should have left it intact.
It and use one part for TM only.
