I've been extensively using smart pointers (boost::shared_ptr to be exact) in my projects for the last two years. I understand and appreciate their benefits and I generally like them a lot. But the more I use them, the more I miss the deterministic behavior...

GetSubsystem would return a reference instead.
Its both simpler, and eliminates the concern you have.
In your example, it would be better if the System held a vector<Subsystem> rather than a vector<shared_ptr<Subsystem> > .

No, it is not inevitable.
As much as I dislike the DH I have to believe that, yes, it is inevitable that the NL will adopt as they are, but with interleague play throughout the year starting in 2012, I think its inevitable.
