I've been extensively using smart pointers (boost::shared_ptr to be exact) in my projects for the last two years. I understand and appreciate their benefits and I generally like them a lot. But the more I use them, the more I miss the deterministic behavior...

GetSubsystem would return a reference instead.
Its both simpler, and eliminates the concern you have.
In your example, it would be better if the System held a vector<Subsystem> rather than a vector<shared_ptr<Subsystem> > .

I have a built 420a motor and i just got around 2600 miles on it. i just noticed im getting blow-by out of my throttle body running down to my cold air intake. i had alot of blow-by on my stock motor but i didnt think i would get it with this new motor...
