Is there a way to prevent Windows Media Player from connecting to the internet and MS using the hosts file or other methods?

I have 10mb virgin media internet service running through cable modem attached to a Belkin wireless router (F5D7231-4) with cat5 that feeds to 4 wireless laptops...

Also, the 'Evening' period for calls is being changed from 6pm-6am to 7pm-7am - ridiculous decision They are just falling in line with BT, and other operators .
The call charges are going up pretty much across the board .

This has happened quite.
Virgin had problems this week with there internet connection AND their phone line.
Your internet is slowed to about 300Kbps for 5 hours unless your on the most expensive package.
