I did an evaluation version is available.
I had to do just the same as you, with about half a dozen VMWare virtual servers.
In converting large vmdks by breaking them down into 2gb drives (with VMWare Converter) prior will be wrong.

My recovery disc does not work on VMWare. Is there anywhere I can find a Vista image?
Or is it simply illegal?

You could download windows 7 or ....
However as you've discovered the recovery disk will not perform an install .

It's not illegal to install an unactivated copy of vista - you can use it in trial mode for up to 120 days .

I have an old hard disc running MS-DOS and some very old programs for which I miss the installation discs.
Now I want to move the complete content of this hard disc to a VmWare hosted by Windows XP.
Is there a way to do this?

You should be able, they generate all kinds of overflows and underflows and some even make some invalid processor calls old MS-DOS applications, it won't be easy.....
Have you tried Dosbox yet? Might be a lot easier than fussing with VMWare.

My text editor warned me of an invalid byte sequence in the summary.
Edit : I copied the XML, saved it as latin1, then opened the file as UTF8 again .
There is an invalid (for UTF8) byte sequence elsewhere in the file.
