In a box marked "whole box for $5", found a Griswold skillet. didn't want anything else in box, though several "vintage" kitchen tools with wooden handles were tempting. Skillet is marked Griswold, Erie PA, 724, I... on bottom. There's a 5 on top side...

How heavy are they? Cast iron is VERY heavy in comparison to aluminum Take a screwdriver and scrape is the natural colour of cast iron? It looks like normal factory applied "seasoning".

While the standard in quality nonstick skillets may be cast iron, it seems that the qualities that make them desirable should incarnate to other cookware as well. dutch ovens being such an example produce great results when used in an oven or over a fire...

Same here.
I regularly use a vintage chicken fryer, cast iron stovetop IN the oven for chili and roasts.
Or dishes backed in the oven, even breads.

I'm looking to purchase just a large nonstick skillet (fry pan) and large saucepan with a cover. just for some minimal cooking, brand new to cooking. i don't need a giant set, have read its not recommended to buy sets anyways.
hopefully nothing too expensive...
