The possible speed improvement is very much offset by the added complexity and problems... .
Given that the amount of data written to the journal is usually very compact and most server Cache, the penalty of using a journal is mostly a non-issue.

Is it possible to disable hfsplus journaling for hfsplus partitions in systems other than using OSX's diskutil ?
My goal is to mount that partition writeable under ubuntu..

It seems the only 100% reliable way is to disable journalling....
Looks like it's read only.
And here's an HFS+ driver you could try.
Have you tried:
mount -t hfsplus <device path here>

You should put it in your check book, the check number, the date, who you paid, and the amount of your payment .
