Many years ago I had my Thunderbird mail client set up so that when I pressed J it marked the mail as junk and moved it to the junk folder.
Now it just marks it as junk and I have to then later highlight all the junk mails, right click, and select "Move...

Check whether you have that selected on all your accounts, AND the Junk Settings under Local to be the case that automatically marked junk don't get sent, but manually marked one does get sent to the junk folder for me.)

If that was the case, your client would have no say in whether it was or wasn't junk....
I know I've set it up before, but I can't find flagging the email as junk even before it gets to you.
To the junk folder? This may only apply to POP3.

I'm using an IMAP mail service (fastmail.fm) which moves Junk email messages to an IMAP folder called "Junk Mail". Outlook archives Junk to "Junk E-Mail".
How do I change Outlook so that it uses the "Junk Mail" folder for Junk instead of the default?

First, delete fastmail's "Junk Mail" folder , , False, False On Error Resume Next ChangeFolderName....
There's no way you can do it, but you could create a rule to move junk mail from the folder where they're placed to the default Junk Mail folder.

Outlook uses the Sender ID status value only during that adjusts the SCL level based on the Sender ID status, so that it is picked up by the junk filter.

I have a variable in my shell script that works as per my expectations. But when I use that variable as filename, I get ?? at the beginning of the string. How do I trim the junk characters?

If, for example, it's always putting two characters at the front that you don't need, you could use:
x=$(someCommand | cut... .
There are any number of ways to fix your variable but first we need to know what to get rid of (i.e., the output of someCommand ) .

I have a pc that I use for testing things that I frequently wipe and re-install using the restore cd that came with it. Unfortunately, the install cd puts a lot of junk on the machine. Sometimes I just live with it, since I know I'll be wiping soon again...

No matter how automated your uninstaller script, there will still be a ton of junk files.
Or even better the disk.
To restore a system from DVD and remove the junk than deploying a clean disk image.
