Can somebody tell me why I cannot get any sound with most of KDE 4?
I'm running a Gentoo box, I'm in both the 'audio' and 'video' groups. I can get sound with mplayer ( but not smplayer ) Firefox and Skype but nothing else. I can't get the test sound ...

For good measure may as well re-compile media-sound/phonon and all it's audio-related deps while you're at it .
Try going to the Backend tab and see which is the top preferred selection, and perhaps change it to prefer one over the other .

How does one detect/get the default browser on KDE? I know that on Gnome one can use "gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command" but what about KDE?

File ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals.
Choose the KMenu-> Control Center -> KDE Components -> Component Chooser -> web browser into a test appropriate for whatever it is you're trying to do.

I've tried KDE 4.0.x/4.1.x/4.3.x ( RC2 ) but I can't seem to accomplish a simple task:
Launching Konsole using a keyboard shortcut
The way I used to do this with KDE 3.5.x would be to :
right-click on the start menu; navigate to the Konsole entry; select...

So in case you do not have KDE 4.2 or 4.3 yet.
Note that until KDE 4.2 there was a bug that causes KDE to ignore this shortcut.
Select the Current shortcut key and click on Save.
On Advanced.

Kate , the KDE advanced text editor, or KWrite , the simpler frontend that doesn't which draws KDE dependencies....
K3B : The best CD/DVD Burner.
Konsole : Most eye candy terminal emulator I've found.
Doesn't feel right under KDE.

I'm going to be installing Debian on my main desktop, that I use mainly for development and Internet use.
I've used everything from GNOME , to XFCE , going through awesome and, of course KDE 2, 3 and now, 4.
I've liked KDE 4, but it felt a little slugish...

Personally I've been sticking with KDE 3.5 until now, but am aware that its days are probably numbered....
If your heart's set on speed, a simple wm on top of X is what can't stand and which ones you enjoy .
And you're used to it, stick with KDE.

On Windows you can manage your git repositories directly in Explorer with TortoiseGit (or TortoiseSVN). Is there something similar for KDE?

For KDE, I would....
You should be able to get it from your distros repository .
Works great.
Used it a ton.
Native to gnome, but not KDE.
There's also nautilussvn for the nautilus file browser.
There's this KDE, but I haven't used it.

I've been playing with Kubuntu, but it seems to lack the polish of Ubuntu.
I am looking for a linux distro in which KDE is the first-class desktop environment. Which linux distributions primarily target KDE?

Note that there are probably more on that list that do so, but these are... .
Out of this list, the ones I am aware of that have KDE by default are Mandriva , PCLinuxOS , OpenSUSE and Knoppix .
See the list here for which distros come with KDE.

I've installed Blueman to use instead of the default KDE 4.3 bluetooth applet. I've added blueman-applet to KDE's startup, so that works, but when I enable bluetooth on my laptop the default applet (kbluetooth4) gets started as well.
How do I prevent ...

KDE has an interface for both managing devices and hardware stacks in System.
And kill Kbluetooth4.

This answer has tips on how to do it on Gnome or Vim, but these don't work on KDE. This bug shows that KDE don't support the ISO notation with Ctrl+Shift plus the character's hex code. Is there any other way I can do this with a keyboard (that is, without...

Of X, not just KDE, thus works everywhere.
