Alternative front-ends; remote virtual machines
The recommended way is to start the VM using vboxheadless .
In VBox v3.06, it's listed in: Chapter 7.
The VirtualBox help file describes how to do what you want .

Is there a way of keeping the index in RAM instead of keeping it on the hard disk?

Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at stackoverflow):
Here's a basic usage....
Check out the RAMDirectory documentation.
Mount the RAM disk as your index directory, and you should be done .
A mini-HOWTO is available at http://www.vanemery.com/Linux/Ramdisk/ramdisk.html.
A RAM disk could be a solution for this.
