I'm sure we've all been in situations where a key date is approaching (launch, beta, etc.) and we need to put in long hours. However, even day-to-day there is more work to be done than time to do it.

You should check out Luigi Auriemmas papers on Half-Life.
Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike:Source etc all the general idea.
Series upon which the original half life engine is based.

I'd say that link explains what you need to do: Don't ever assume state, and expect your itemrenderer to be reused for multiple items (so don't store data for one item at object level in the itemrenderer, only use variables inside your function)
