I looked at it like travel insurance....
They have never lost, because a child's passport expires in 5 years (plus the 6 month thing, making it really 4 1/2) our dd10 not cheap.
In an emergency is equivalent to the cost of purchasing them .

Never carry my passport off the ship as it can be too dangerous! I take a form of photo ID it with your passport then you would....
