When you close the lid, the Macbook enters in stop mode, which shuts down the network interfaces!
I use my MacBook all day long with the lid closed and an external monitor, bluetooth mouse.

Tried (i know it doesn't work) Macbook PSU and the bluelight me if I'm wrong, but you should be able....
Let's see what happens with the Pro as i don't have suitable PSU for it at the moment .
For parts but atleast the Macbook works just fine.

You most certainly can! Of course, you would need to install OS X from it's install disc to get it up and running .
