I have never worked with mahogany, my mother in law wants a surround for her fireplace.
Are there any issues specific to mahogany that I should know about? For example, hickory has a tendency to tear out, cherry can burn, walnut dust can be hazardous ...

African mahogany is less expensive than Honduran, but can....
You might want to fill the pores.
Also, depending on the species it can be stringy and open pored .
Folks call lots of things mahogany.
What comes to mind is that be careful buying.

I have one of the mahogany top studio models. The only real problem I have with it is that the bridge pickup (498T) is too muddy with distortion. Any recommendations? I don't necessarily need a "hot" pickup, even though I'm mostly a metal guy.

From my experience, my all-mahogany faded SG would never be described as "muffled." i bought an all mahogany custom and it had an sd dime bag darrel 15k monster in it or something ridiculous
an SD JB 80 for a decent price--go for it.

the neck is due back next week and its made from the same Flame Mahogany wood with a rosewood board.

Will it still be tight and clear in a big heavy guitar with a 25.1 scale and a mahogany neck? I've ran one in a SOLID mahogany custom 7620 body by Adam Bath them.
