I would definitely upgrade.
Personally, I had someone offer to buy my 3G but it would still cost me money out of my pocket to upgrade to the 32Gb 3GS. I’m holding off until next year. My situation is different than yours though.

I'm new to the Iphone too... 10 days today to be exact. I went with the 3Gs, because it was an upgrade from and had different features from the 3G. Nothing is bug free, but I didn't consider the 3Gs to be first generation.
I say Yea on upgrading... but then I have no frame of reference between the two.

Subject: [apple-iphone] 3G or 3Gs
As most of you know, I am new to the iPhone. I bought a refurbished 3G 1
1/2 months ago.
I had to call AT&T regarding a credit that was due to me and while I was on
the phone I made a stink about how I bought a refurbished phone and now they
are selling the new 3G for the same price. An hour later the rep told me
that I could take the phone to an AT&T store and upgrade it and that he put
all the notes in the account. Now if he actually put the notes in the
account I don't know but didn't feel like going to the store on the weekend.
Here's my question. Is it worth it (for me) to upgrade to a 3Gs or stay
with my 3G? I'm new to all this and have been playing with my new phone
over the weekend and am amazed with what it can do. Should I wait for 2
years while they get the bugs out of the 3Gs? Just asking for opinions here
I'm thinking that since I'm new to it all, I should stay with the 3G but
maybe the 3Gs isn't that much harder in learning.
I know it's a silly questions, maybe I should get the Yes/No appl and let it
decide for me huh
Your input is appreciated.

I bought the $99 3G about 10 days before the 3GS came out & traded it
out for the latest and greatest!
There is a WORLD of difference in the two! The most important change
is the speed. It is lightening fast which is great for those like
myself who spend a lot of quality time with their iPhone.
I vote for the upgrade.

Your vote sounds good to me.
Maybe since I don't know what I'm doing on the 3G, I can learn it all on the 3GS.

If he is sending them as MMS - AT&T does not support this yet. He can send
them to your e-mail address and you can view them through the Mail App as
e-mail but you can not receive them as MMS until AT&T enables it for iPhone
users in "late summer'.

This morning I had to go into my google account again to get all of my calendars to show. And they are only showing for 2 days then it's just my personal calendar again. Before 3.0 I would have to put in my user name and password about every couple of weeks and it would show all calendars all the time. What am I missing? Or is this some kind of bug in my phone?

Cynthia - it sounds like (and correct me if I am wrong because the info is a
little vague) that you are trying to pull up your Google Calendar as a Web
Application (IE either through Google App navigating to Google Calendar then bookmarking it to the home screen) -
either way, you are NOT trying to access nor sync your Google Calendar with
the built in Calendar App of the iPhone, correct?
In that case, you need to go to Settings allowing Cookies, not clearing the cache or deleting cookies, and turn on
the options to remember your passwords and possibly Auto-Fill (although you
probably don't need autofill - just the remembering of the login
information) -
Keep in mind that if you are using the Google Calendar Web App and you log
out of ANY other Google Web App (Mail, contacts, etc - any of them) it will
log you out of the calendar web app as well.
If you do want to sync your Google Calendar(s) with your actual built in
iPhone calendar, you can do so via an exchange account for bidirectional
over the air syncing using Google Mobile Sync (fairly easy) or add each of
your Google Calendars as subscription iCS calendars but I believe this makes
them one way (Google to iPhone not iPhone to Google). You can also set them
up as CalDav but there have been reports of it slowing the calendar app to a
crawl when you do that.

You should see it in the Device List whenever it is plugged into your
computer via USB cable - you can turn Automatic Syncing When Device is
Plugged in - Off in iTunes so that it will not sync until you click Sync -
otherwise even after it is done with the automatic sync it should still be
visible until you eject it or disconnect the USB cable.

While his logic is kind of half-way there, Apple stores have more stock
because it is an Apple product - they want to sell more of them - I have not
read, heard, or seen one report of an Apple store being out of stock at all
- they get nearly 10x more units per store. Also, the iPhone is just one of
100 or more devices AT&T stores sell, they only keep enough in stock that
takes up the assigned space.

3. I flipped through every state in the list and the only model that is
"sold out" is the 16GB WHITE - other than Los Angeles' Beverly Center (they
are sold out every model) but there are 18 other CA locations, especially
The Grove that have them all in stock (except 16GB White). Also,
apple.comhas not had any delay, it is a 2-business day turn around and
your phone
gets shipped direclty from China whereas att.com is a 7-14 day delay (or
longer depending on the account status but that is not an Apple or iPhone
issue, that is an AT&T issue).

and "restore". What am I missing here?
I'm greedy, I'm hoping it's here by Friday because I want to play with it
Thanks again for your input.

Just be sure to sync before you do it. It backs up practically everything (it didn't save my progress in a game though :) ). I went to AT&T, they only did order_iPhone after the initial release (here in Roanoke, VA). I checked the local BestBuy (only other local place that sold iPhones) online, and they showed NOT AVAILABLE TO ORDER OR IN STORE. For the heckuvit, I asked the sales person (I was there to buy a Monster phone belt holder w/built in battery), and she said that she had one (under lock and key). I said 'sold'. (my iPhone 3G wasn't even 6 months old, so I paid $400 to 'upgrade' to the 3Gs 16gig, but I know I'm foolish at times).
It was activated within minutes, and I took it home, plugged it in to the computer, clicked on the iTunes PHONE and told it to restore. Nice and simple. Music, apps, and all.
BTW, the Monster case is really nice. It's battery has more mAh (1800) than the iPhone, which more than doubles the life of the battery. It keeps the iPhone's battery charged and then uses itself to give you a lot of usage between charges. I just wished that its usb connector was the iPhone type so that I could sync while charging it up instead of taking the phone out and plugging it into the computer for syncing.

Itunes automatically backs up your phone. When you hook up the new phone it will ask u if you want it to be new or if you want to transfer everything from the 3g. It was so easy but takes a while if you have a lot of apps and songs.

Well after thinking about it yesterday, I went to the AT&T store and bought
the new 3Gs. It should have it in 7 days or less and they did NOT give me
any trouble about my refurbished 3G nor it being over the return period.
The gentleman who helped me on the phone last week did put everything in the
computer like he said.
Now here's my question. The guy at the AT&T store told me to back up my

So... better for a new ATT customer to go to an Apple store to get the phone and sign up for service?
I'm also eligible for a 20% discount on the service - wonder if that can be done at an Apple store too, or only at ATT.

I'll put it this way -
1st iPhone New AT&T Customer went to Apple Store - not a problem
Went to AT&T store to add a line? 2 hours and 3 subsequent calls to AT&T
Customer Service
2nd iPhone Upgraded from 1st ordered from apple.com? Not A Problem
AT&T Price reduction through apple? Back on credit card within 5 days of
being announced
Went to AT&T store to add a different type of device to a different line? 1
and half hours and still calling customer service every few days with
different issues on the account.
So for me, always better to deal with Apple and let them deal with AT&T.
I don't know the terms of your discount but if it is with AT&T chances are
you are going to have to call their Customer Service department to get it
right regardless of if you go through Apple or AT&T retail store.

Barry, it doesn't sync through the case like the other (similar)
case/batteries do (Mophie, Kensington, Tekkon, etc) - they all come with
MicroUSB or MiniUSB cables that allows charging of both the case and the
phone and syncing through the case - you just stop using the Apple included
cable (unless you have another iPhone or iPod). We have a 3G and a 3GS both
with JP Airs and have plug the MicroUSB cables into the same computer and it
charges all 4 (two phones, 2 cases) at the same time and allows syncing of
either one. I can also plug the USB side of the MiniUSB cable into the
iPhone included AC Adapter and it charges both fine.

Hi Bill, when I plug the Monster's cable to the holster (with iPhone in
place and connected), it doesn't do anything but charge the monster batter
as well as the iPhone's battery. It doesn't pull up iTunes (nor sync). I saw
the Kensington extended battery (in Bestbuy), but it sticks out down below,
meaning that my existing phone holders (belt clip) wouldn't work, so I went
for the Monster (besides that it has an 1800 mAh battery). I have the iPhone
connector plugged in as well, so that I can do a daily sync.

To clarify I was just curious - it seems strange that it would charge but
not allow pass through syncing. As long as it does what you want it, then
you made a good decision for yourself. I would like the additional 600mAh,
but I love the JP Air as it fits naturally as a hard protective case and
adds very little weight considering it is a full case and battery and allows
rapid charging of both it and the phone as well as syncing which was
important for me. My only 'complaint' if you can call it that is that it
doesn't protect the screen at all - my previous InCase neoprene had a hard
leather 'lip' around the screen which offered protection but made it hard to
touch the edges of the screen - I now prefer being able to use the entire
screen but have to be very careful about not dropping the phone.

clip that actually grips the belt or pants edge so the whole assembly
cannot fall off. Does anyone know of or own such?

The Monster has a front lid (photo on Bestbuy doesn't show it well) to
protect the phone. It 'does' weigh 9.6oz's (not including the iPhone.
I just took 2 photos of it, one with the phone in, and the other lying on
the lid, to show the size and thickness of it. There's a little LCD light on
the side (green-on, red-off or discharge) as well.
Since this group doesn't appear to handle html, I uploaded the merged photo
on my website for anyone interested in the Monster holster/battery.
Here's the link (assuming it comes in the message):

Hi Dick, I'd say that it has a strong clip. Over time, with any, you never know tho. I usually clip it to my shorts pocket instead of the beltline (convenient and easy to take off). The two things that I'm not crazy about is the weight (9.6oz) and that you have to take the iPhone out to plug/sync it to your computer. Considering that it looks to be a quality holster and that it more than doubles the life of the battery power (having its own battery to charge the iphone battery), I'm happy with it.
