It also is available on Amazon for about the same price ($82.98) - and the
"single" membership is $63.99 - so for $19 more you get the "family" pack -
opposed to $99 and $149

Yes. You basically just purchase a new subscription and apply the code to
your account, extending it by a year.

Can you use the Amazon-purcahsed product as a
renewal (as opposed to starting a subscription)?

I'm pretty sure that whatever "key" you purchase qualifies the plan - so if
you purchase a MobileMe regular subscription will only enable your primary
account.

Just chatted with Apple on their chat support.
I currently have the family plan. If I purchase a single account
activation key from wherever and type that in, the primary account
will renew into a single account, and the sub accounts will just go
away. Simple enough.
Thanks.
Mike
