Can't branch projects on Launchpad
|

On Wed, 25 Jan 2012 11:36:45 -0700, "Dan MacMillan" <...@emerald-associates.com
Hi,
I have been using Bazaar successfully on Windows 7 for a bit over a
year. When I try to branch a project on Launchpad, I get output like
this:
2012-01-25 11:17:43.20 D:\Develop\bzrhookslp:bzr-text-checker
You have not informed bzr of your Launchpad ID, and you must do this to
write to Launchpad or access private data. See "bzr help
launchpad-login".
bzr: ERROR: short readline in the readvfile hunk: 'Bazaar pack format 1

This used to work. It is, for example, how I installed the bookmarks
plugin when I set up Bazaar in the first place.
I think it has to do, somehow, with something I did last week. I
already had Bazaar installed from the Windows installer ... I believe
2.2.1. Last week though I wanted to do a trial conversion of one of my
branches to mercurial using their convert plugin, and I needed to be
using the Python version of Bazaar in order to do that. So, without
uninstalling the Windows build of Bazaar I already had installed, I
installed Python, pywin32, and Python edition of Bazaar (as well as the
Python version of mercurial, although I don't think that's relevant
here). In fact I installed and uninstalled all of these things several
times because I don't really understand the Python ecosystem and I had
mismatches between the Python version and these other programs, as well
as bitness (32 vs 64) issues.
I didn't ever get my convert working and I decided to try again on one
of my *nix systems later. I uninstalled everything ... all Python and
everything that depended on Python. I left my Windows Bazaar install
intact though and it does work for most operations. When I tried
branching some plugins from Launchpad this week though I got the error
above. So I uninstalled Bazaar and installed the newest Bazaar (Windows
build), and it didn't work. I deleted my %APPDATA%\bazaar directory
thinking there might be a conflict with something I had in there, but it
still didn't work.
Other developers here can successfully branch from Launchpad so there is
definitely something messed up with my system. I just don't know what.
I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. Or if this is the
wrong forum, just let me know where to go.
Thanks,
Dan MacMillan

This is a little mysterious, does it happen consistently the same way
if you try and branch different repositories, to different places? As
you suspected, I have no problem branching that repo over http. One
option, if you've not tried it, is to see whether putting a public key
on launchpad, telling bzr your launchpad user names like it suggested,
and branching over bzr+ssh has the same issue or not.
Apart from that, I haven't got any clever ideas.

Martin,
I only tried branching a couple of projects on Launchpad and they all failed the same way.
I did as you suggested and branched the project over bzr+ssh and it worked. bzr+ssh is the method we use here to access our repositories as well. We also have some repositories that we can access over HTTPS, and they also work here using Bazaar. It just doesn't like Launchpad + HTTP for some reason.
At any rate, using bzr+ssh is a serviceable workaround. Thanks for assisting me.

I suspect that you or your isp have an http proxy that is interfering with
the traffic. If you use only ssh you should avoid the problem.

Yes, I thought we might have network issues as well. I asked my colleague, who I share an office with, to run the command though and it works for him. That kind of rules out any of the common infrastructure, which is pretty much everything upstream of my workstation.
