Matt,
I'm only a couple weeks post op myself but so far so good... I can safely say though that getting in shape before surgery is a good idea, helps a great deal getting back on your feet. You might see if you can get some good outpatient physical therapy for your hip starting a few months ahead of time... maybe your insurance will pay for it? Those trainers can show you what's what and then you can do the workout on your own at a gym or at home. Some kind of conditioning exercise is good too, if you can manage it. Hope this is helpful.
Best wishes CB --- In surf...@yahoogroups.com, Matt Iverson <...@...

OK, from the title of your post, you are talking about exercise BEFORE surgery, right? If so, I would say it definitely does help keep as mobile and pain-free as possible prior to surgery.
My limp had gotten so bad before surgery that my left foot started to turn out to help me compensate for the limp and pain. My chiropractor had me doing hip rehab exercises to improve that (which they did) and to keep that hip -- and me -- in the best shape possible. These were a combination of different lunges (not deep) and ball exercises.
I also did a lot of aerobic work, finding that the elliptical machine and pool aerobics (deep water) at the Y were the only aerobic work I could do without pain. (I love walking, but had to give it up close to surgery, because my lower back would hurt so bad after walking.) I also did weight training -- all over.
My PT following surgery said what I had done was very smart. She had read an article in one of her journals saying that being in shape prior to surgery helps the patient in his or her recovery -- pain tolerance is better, rehab goes faster, and the overall quality of life is better.

-Matt.
I was super fit before surgery after months of focused determination and lots of ibuprophen. 800 mg three times a day. I was intent on loosing 20 pounds and building strength with the help of a trainer and lots of water aerobics. Four year of pain leading up to that point had me overweight and out of shape. The elyptical machine was a huge part of my training. up to 30 minutes 4 or 5 days a week. This is my experience but I am aware not every one can manage the menace of pain well enough to endure the deligent program of excercise.
Rehab is all about re engaging the muscles and building balanced strength if you did not have it going into the OR. Also the possible surgical adhesions may be addresses in Rehab. MY surgeon did not prescribe rehab, but sid do nothing for 6 weeks and then bike and swim. that plan workied well for me except the 6 weeks. I was back in the pool in 2 weeks with an oclusive dressing of the wound. I didi have the usual PT instructions to follow post op in bed on my own with flexion excercises of the glutes, thighs and calves.
All the best and good luck.

Hi! I am 60 years old and 4 weeks post-op LBHR and just got done cutting the front and back yard with a walk behind Lawnboy. It took about an 1 1/2 hours, but it was like using the walker, only it cut the grass. It felt great!!!
I followed the POST-OP exercises recommended at http://www.mcminncentre.co.uk and are also found at http://www.surfacehippyinfo.com. for a month and a half prior to my surgery. I did them about 45 minutes per day 3 times per week and I believe that the pre op exercises definitely helped in my recovery. Also, if you any problems with consipation due to the pain meds, I highly recommend KONSYL, an all natural fiber supplement perscribed to me by an Oncologist for another problem I was having.
Take it very easy the first two weeks post-op and do a lot of the bed exercises while just lying in bed.
Good luck and I hope this helped.
Steve

My doctor advised me to stick with PT and to reduce any kind of exercise movement if I had pain. I use isometric bands here @ home to strengthen the inner/outer thighs and at the gym I use the adducter/abducter machine and leg press with the band tied around my ankles for stability. You can also do pelvic lifts on a ball if that doesn't hurt. I also find the nautlilus treadclimber to be good for aerobic activity but I have to do it without climbing hills or I'll really trash my torn labrum. Any physical activity is better than nothing!

Subject: [surfacehippy] Does it help to do exercises before surgery?
I'm having tough time in the mobility dept atm but does it help? if so I would love to know what rehab is all about.
Anyone know the exercises or have a link?
