[xubuntu-users] Xubuntu wireless sensivity vs. Window

On Mon, 30 Jan 2012 14:21:02 -0700, Lee Gold <...@operamail.com

Hi,

Using latest version of Xubuntu. On WinXP when the native app scans for
Wifi networks I get about 15. In the same place Xubuntu (Wicd) shows 1
to 3 access points. What could cause this wide discrepancy?

Thanks.

Hi,
I have installed the xfce4-goodies, which includes the
xfce4-timer-plugin for the panel.
It works fine, but the progress bar does not work.
The two similar bars of the netload-plugin work fine though.
Any ideas?

I would try a different theme. Sometimes the progress is the same color
as the panel in the theme used, and doesn't show up.

Tried them all, but none makes any difference.
But indeed, I now notice a barely visible difference between a gray

I don't have experience with Windows so I'm not sure, but some devices
are quite generous about what they believe is actually "in range" - of
those 15 in WinXP, could you actually get signal from all of them
which would allow you to connect?

It may also be the driver for your wireless card, I found it got worse
signal in general in Linux because the open source driver I was using
for my card on my old laptop wasn't as good as the closed source one,
I switched to the closed source one and it got much better. What card
do you have?

For me this question I have noticed once. In my school, we have the school Internet access for our school website like bbs.
When i worked on windows it worked well and i can always get the IP address automatically. But when i used Ubuntu it could not find the wireless net . I had to type in the name of the net to search for the hidden wireless net and then Ubuntu could find the right net to get the IP address.

The reason I think is the drivers of my WLAN card which has some problems. But I can not sure.
However I think the reason is simple if it was true, the WLAN card company does not support Linux well. But because the problem is hard to fix so I give up and after all I can use it now so I don't think it is a big problem.

My advice for you is to check webiste of your WLAN card company to see whether they support Linux or not.
I hope it can help you.

Best wishes!

Hi,
You could try running
sudo iwlist scanning
to see if more networks are detected. You could also try using the
standard network-manager (sudo apt-get install network-manager
network-manager-gnome), and see if more networks are found. Failing
that, you could edit /etc/network/interfaces
<http://nixcraft.com/ubuntu-debian/13278-etc-network-interfaces-wireless-wifi-ex ample.htmland force the interface to connect to a certain wifi access point.

Sudo updatedb and locate does not consistantly work. Some stuff it
locate finds other stuff it does not. I'm looking a file and folder
names square in the face and trying them and it does not work. I do $
sudo updatedb and then $ locate filename, tried catfish with same lack
of results.

What could be the problem? Always worked without a hitch. Using latest
Xubuntu version.

Thanks

Locate didn't use to search/catalog anything in /media, I suppose that
somewhere there is a config file that determines where it searches and
where it doesn't. Maybe someone knows.

heheheh, just did "locate locate" and found this:

ric@ima:/etc$ more updatedb.conf
PRUNE_BIND_MOUNTS="yes"
# PRUNENAMES=".git .bzr .hg .svn"
PRUNEPATHS="/tmp /var/spool /media /home/.ecryptfs"
PRUNEFS="NFS nfs nfs4 rpc_pipefs afs binfmt_misc proc smbfs autofs
iso9660 ncpfs
coda devpts ftpfs devfs mfs shfs sysfs cifs lustre_lite tmpfs usbfs
udf fuse.gl
usterfs fuse.sshfs curlftpfs ecryptfs fusesmb devtmpfs"
ric@ima:/etc$

...and there you have it, where it will search and which directories are
excluded. :) Ric

Is there any one who has the same problem? This is a basic, essential
function for an OS - I wish it simply worked, it always used to.
Googling the problem but no obvious fixes.

Lee,

I'm not sure whether you're completely dismissing Ric's advice (it's a little
rude not to report whether suggestions lead to anywhere at all), but all in all,
we're gonna need a lot more information that this.

Start by posting the output of a command, and then list the contents of a
directory where you expect the file(s) to be found (again, with the command) and
finally the configuration file's contents (that Ric pointed to). Only then we
will have some data to work with.

Wouldn't hurt to see you doing `sudo updatedb.mlocate` either.

Also, include the output of `apt-cache policy mlocate`.

The configuration file was quite explicit as to what and where it
doesn't update the database from. It makes complete sense to NOT include
a directory that changes on the fly ... like /media (which changes every
time you insert a CD or DVD or other detachable device) and /tmp and
/proc and /var/log etc... all of those entries are pure cruft, from the
user perspective, when compared to all the stable files on your machine
for human usage. But, now that you know of the configuration file, feel
free to override it and edit it to suit your whim. That's the thing
about Linux, you can make it do things, as you please, that other's
wouldn't.

If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces. :) Ric

Hi,

my /etc/updatedb.conf:

PRUNE_BIND_MOUNTS="yes"
# PRUNENAMES=".git .bzr .hg .svn"
PRUNEPATHS="/tmp /var/spool /media /home/.ecryptfs"
PRUNEFS="NFS nfs nfs4 rpc_pipefs afs binfmt_misc proc smbfs autofs
iso9660 ncpfs coda devpts ftpfs devfs mfs shfs sysfs cifs lustre_lite
tmpfs usbfs udf fuse.glusterfs fuse.sshfs curlftpfs ecryptfs fusesmb
devtmpfs"

Ric's advice is relevant and now that I look at it I see "PRUNEPATHS"
which must mean "remove from the search" and I think I was searching for
many names in my /home dir as a quick test which did not work, and now I
see /home/... is "pruned". That must be my problem.

I'm sorry, I should have read Rick's post carefully. Thank you Ric and
Jaska for the help.

You probably want to keep "/home/.encryptfs" in the list of folders to
be pruned. It contains the actual encrypted data - just a bunch of
randomly named files like "KFMVgJ0UBSIeaXX0YukGa6Ix". Having that
pollute your locatedb probably isn't very useful. What you want is to
have the data in the encrypted filesystem indexed, which is the
"encryptfs" bit you edited out.

Cheers,

Chris.

But, if your /home directory is encrypted, the I would suppose one would

This page talks about the whole thing:

Near the bottom of the page there's a warning about doing something
related to what what I did - editing the conf file. Right now I don't
want to read to deeply into it. I'll just reinstall Xubuntu without the
encrypted /home option. I wish I would of been warned during the install
that locate won't work on /home when you choose this option, maybe
there's a readme I should have seeen...but now I know.
