I like to use grip to rip CDs, but it may be a bit overloaded with
options for your taste. K3B is very simple to use, but it will pull
in a lot of dependencies to install.
I have not used VLC much, is there an option to tell it which drive to
use? You could try using another media player like Xine or Mplayer.

Hi. Not sure if this will help you but here it goes:
Regarding downloading Medibuntu, see:
http://www.unixmen.com/how-to-add-medibuntu-repository-in-ubuntu-via-terminal-a nd-gui/
Regarding playing DVD in VLC or any player other than Parole, what I do is
first open the media player I want to use, then I insert the DVD into the
drive and (at least on my machine) it then automatically opens the movie.
