I have done a fair amount of programming together with mathematicians. Now I am even teaching some high school kids coming from a mathematics background how to program. Most of these people format their code so hideously it's hard to believe. I've even...

Other than that, mathematicians are usually disorganized on many aspects of life.....
I guess that mathematicians of code often, so they tend not to value structure.
If they are failing at style, they are failing in general, IMO .
To teach.
How do mathematicians know when to stop? First the natural numbers were invented for counting. Then, we had to invent addition and subtraction. Multiplication and division soon followed. As if this wasn't enough, mathematicians invented exponentiation...

Re: How do mathematicians know when to stop? when the earth implodes.
Anyone got a good explanation of "combinators" (Y-combinators etc. and NOT the company) I'm looking for one for the practical programmer who understands recursion and higher-order functions, but doesn't have a strong theory or math background. (Note that...

I gave what I think is a pretty good and reasonably short explanation of the Y-combinator on the Boston Perlmongers... .
This is a good article: http://www.dreamsongs.com/NewFiles/WhyOfY.pdf The code examples are in scheme, but they shouldn't be hard to follow .

Slainte! Hamish, I believe I've spotted y'er problem.
It's always fascinating.
I have watched many a glass of Guinness do that over the years .

It helps if you have access to an offcuts rack like this: Workshop_phot.jpg About half of what... .
Part of the reason this jig was cheap is that I built it mostly out of scrap and offcuts .
Well, more a clarification.
Up five minutes and a correction already.

I've thought about this for years. Also, the (undoubtedly) overlapping areas of applied math and theoretical math. So, at the risk of unnecessary rigor in classification: 1) What are the differences between applied and theoretical math; and 2) How goal...

As a pure mathematician, you might be interested in algebraic topology for its own sake, not a mathematician.

Your fov at any range....
Disregard it.
In the grand scheme of things what you're 'cutting off' is insignificant .
Correct? Edit, I don't feel like doing the math.
And by base your talking about the 'top'.
What unit? So by top corner you mean the 'bottom' .
Being a geek myself, I found this article interesting. I couldn't get the body weight simulator to run on my platform, I will try on a different setup. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/15/science/a-mathematical-challenge-to-obesity.html?smid=pl-share

The last thing we as a society need, that this article alluded to at the end, is our government (I'm speaking of the US but it probably applies everywhere) telling us how much... .
However, I tend to tread lightly on this stuff.
