Rumors say CDs and DVDs won't remember your data longer than ten years. Are there backup media that do better?

7 more is.
7 years from now you might have enough DVD's to fill a couple Blu-rays .
There are CD's/DVD's that are specifically designed for long term storage but as always for the media to be a problem.
And refreshing it.

When we get physical media, it is ripped to ISO almost immediately and put on a dedicated file server along with text if needed.
We make it a point not to rely on physical media for precisely this purpose.

I've always been somewhat paranoid about verifying data backed up to removable media, so after copying stuff to a USB flash drive or portable HDD, I invariably unmount the drive, remount it and diff -q the stored files with the originals.
Years ago I ...

I may decide to pick up the battle of advocating for the use of external hard drives instead of Blu-ray discs for data backup.

You may want to consider backing up to internal hard drives as well .
20x35 = $700.
To get 1TB in those discs, you'd need 20.
It costs less and saves a ton of time, and time is money .
Just for the simplicity of it all, I'd go with the hard drive .

I'm contemplating a new home file server build, with the bulk of the files being media (movies, music, photos, etc.). I currently run WHS v1 on a little HP MediaSmart, but I'm going to a custom build for the next server.
WHS v2 sounds interesting, but...

Throw in storage pools that you can add to and divide disks w/ unraid is a plus too.
Against any new media taggers going crazy or such.

You still need to do that on a PC or mac and copy the files to the Dune .
Note however that the Dune box (or any media streamer currently on the market) will rip the dvd.
Can also hang usb drives of the back too for extra storage.
