Giving narcotics at triage Does anyone dispense oral narcotics for pain at triage before a patient is seen by a doctor? My hospital will have protocols on what to give. I am interested in what my liablity is if the patient leaves without seeing a doctor...

Most hospitals have standing triage orders for tylenol and motrin .
NO!! We as nurses do not order meds.

We are starting to have all patients on pain meds for > 6 weeks sign these and have them are prescribing and....
Illinois, for example, has, etc.
We check this regularly for patients on chronic pain meds.

That is simply NOT TRUE and for them to scare you like that is just plain cruel.
There are no adequate studies showing that those medications cause birth defects at all.
If the mother is in severe pain it puts a lot of stress on the fetus.

It is a time released morphine and is suppose to last 24 hours .
I have been on every pain med out there including oxycontin, ms contin, duragesic patches etc of Avinza which is a newer pain med.

Has anyone had trouble getting off pain meds? I have to say that I am embarassed bringing this question here. My surgery was Oct 15th. I came home taking 14 pain pills per day, as prescribed. I've slowly cut back, and am not on 2 short-acting pain pills...

I have had a very difficult time finding a doctor who will give me anything that is a narcotic, not even tylenol 3 or vicodin. He says these drugs aren't for chronic pain, only acute pain. I am in pain almost every day, some days much worse than others...

Narcotics will never be made illegal, but nor do I think they should be. If you were going to make narcotics illegal - you may as well make alcohol, junk food and cars illegal - all of these things kill more people each year than narcotic abuse.

Can you live drug free when your in severe chronic pain ? I mean, it seems my family, and my dr. seem to want me off opiates..but even on them my pain levels are 8,9,10/10. its hard to concentrate on anything very long. but i hate it dictating my life...
