While I don't need a hotel in Munich, I have seen Hotel Jedermann from the outside hotels you picked difficult to beat....
Both are cheap for hotels in Munich, which is partially due to the location - close to Hauptbahnhof / Central Station.

Have fun Cheers Munich airport and there are many Hotels nearby.
Takes about 40min to the Munich station and as I said the hotel is just across the road and costs 10 in summer, but excellent value for money and great location.

We will be traveling from Charlotte to Munich to Helsinki on 8/18/2012 on Lufthansa.
We have one hour and 15 minutes layover in Munich. Is this enough time?
Will we have to go through security or passport control?

In Munich this is fine.
Some people see the word 'layover' and believe it refers flights .
If Munich is your first stop in Europe, you will go thru Passport Control, but not Customs, but Munich is pretty user friendly.
