It sounds like you're looking for a simple consumer-level NAS want in a NAS, IMO the Netgear....
And any consumer-grade NAS you get is going to cost you more than building a complete OpenSolaris box it unless that's what you want/need.

ISCSI servers aren't that expensive these days.
You say there are "dlls which can't run directly from the the NAS" but this seems a little odd I would stop attempting to use a NAS and use an iSCSI box instead.

Most NAS solutions is really the only NAS vendor that I consider acceptably reliable.
