Deep down in WinDef.h there's this relic from the segmented memory era:
#define far #define near
This obviously causes problems if you attempt to use near or near as variable names. Any clean workarounds? Other then renaming my variables?

They are defined :
#include <windows.h> #undef near #undef far
You probably don't want to undefined near and far the macro locally and add it back when....
Best not to.
Maybe:
#undef near #undef far
could be dangerous though...

I have the following definition.
far int* near IntegerPointer;
Does this mean, a pointer placed in 'near' memory pointing to a integer placed in far memory area.
Can anyone please clarify.

Read declarations (from the inside out and) from right to left:
@far int* @near IntegerPointer....
Yes, you got that right.
Would be just pointer to far memory, whereas
int* @near IntegerPointer;
looks like pointer placed in near memory.

Near pointers refer (as an offset) to the current.
Far and near pointers were used in old platforms like DOS on this platform is written segment:offset , in hexadecimal.
I can't, but I think wikipedia can.
