I just noticed watching tonight's Bulls vs Nets game, Nets are sporting "New York" on the front of their jersey. Did they always have "New York" on their jersey or did I miss out on something?

Either you mistook what their jerseys said or they're pushing something that isn't correct .
They are currently the New Jersey Nets.

They will tell other developers what invariants and preconditions must hold .
Seems like you've answered your own question: put lots of assertions into the code .
