Reversing course

On Wed, 3 Jun 2009 13:35:26 -0700 (PDT), Veronique <...@gmail.com

A couple weeks ago, I bought a reversible jacket, which I find myself
wearing reversed about a third of the time (or two-thirds, depending
on your POV.) This morning, I saw someone in the coffee shop with a
reversible zip hoody, who was wearing it dirt-brown on the outside
(the inside was burnt orange.) The thought flitted through my mind
that the dirt-brown color was a color I'd never buy ever to wrap
around my body, and if given it I would have worn the orange side out.
But orange is a good color for me. Anyway. So then I got to thinking
about reversible clothing, and how often I, or anyone, reverses it
routinely. Because I'm sure I've had other reversible items that
never, ever were reversed: I decided on the outer color and that was
that.

So I am wondering, do any of you wear a piece of clothing that's
reversible, and do you ever reverse it? Why or why not?

I have three reversible jackets, one of which I've worn reversed.

The orange one (hey!) is a mango orange color on one side, and the
same color with white polka dots on the other. I wear the dots on the
inside so they only show at the collar and hood. I like the polka
dots, they're fun. I like the jacket for the way it fits, the fabric,
and the bright color. I bought it despite the fact that it's
reversible, rather than because of. Mango is fine, but I'm not going
around in a block of mango orange with white polka dots. Looking like
a mango with legs is ok, but looking like a dotted mango with legs is
not ok.

The other two jackets are alike. I bought the first one in Carmel. It
cost a small fortune, but I liked it; it's lightweight, simply styled
and water-resistant. I purchased the next one at Salvation Army. It
was probably a tenth of what they sell them for in Carmel; how could I
resist?

They're both black on one side, with a contrasting fabric of purplish
blue for one, and peach for the other. I don't think I've ever worn
the peach side out, just the black. I believe I wore the blue side
out once, with black as the trim.

I have a long skirt that I wear bright side (turquoise and purple and
pink and...orange!) out in the summer and cool side (turquoise and
purple and blue and green) out in the winter. But I ran over it too
many times with the wheel of my office chair and it needs repairs.

The only reversible item of clothing I can ever remember owning was a
waistcoat my mother made for me when I was eight. It was navy blue
corduroy on one side, and pretty red floral print on navy blue on the
other side. Needless to say, I think I always wore it floral side out!

Two of my leather belts are reversible. One is dark
brown on one side and light brown on the other side.
The other is black on one side and medium gray on
the other side. I hardly ever reverse them though,
preferring black and dark brown.

I once had a reversible belt, but I would never buy one again.
It turned out that the belt I bought, was made from two thin pieces of leather
veneer sewn together. After a short time this thin veneer split apart and
the belt was ruined.

Any belt I buy from now on, will have one finished side and will be
made from one thick piece of leather.

I do wear reversible socks though.

Yes, well they have lasted for 20 years now and still
look like new. I only wear them on Sundays and for
funerals [17 funerals last year], because those are
the times that I have dress pants with the narrower
belt loops.

That describes my other 4 belts, that I wear with
work pants the rest of the week [only one at a time,
naturally]. One of them I've had for at least 35 years.

Mine was the same color on each side, but the initial idea was that
a reversible belt might tend to keep my belt straighter. Over time,
my belts tend to distort into a somewhat serpentine shape from being
stretched around my torso.

I just point my belt to the left on days with odd numbers and point it
to the right on days with even numbers.

(point means the tip end goes on that side; the buckle end is --
surprisingly -- on the other side, but it doesn't point well.)

black with black/white camo on top. I have only worn it twice each way.
What I do notice is the zipper pull on the "wrong side" when it is
black out.

I've had a couple of jackets with the zipper on the "wrong side",
including my regular goretex. The styling is unisex so if they fit and
keep me warm and dry I couldn't care less what side the zipper is on.
Shirts with buttons, now, that's another thing, but the differences in
styling would generally be a little more obvious.
