rewards. Up to $20,000 to anyone in Afghanistan willing to inform on

The US had no shortage of takers on the offers, and anxious to show that
they were "doing something" about terrorism, didn't question the
stoolies. They just went and rounded up whoever got fingered. And of

eventually released to go back home after years in the American gulag.
The Taliban was delighted with the American offer, and used it to finger
people who were suspected of corroborating with the Americans, once word
got out that the Yanks weren't questioning the stoolies' claims. And a
lot of them wound up in the Gulag because they flirted with the
neighbors' daughter, or hadn't paid a debt, or were just annoying.
It's pretty unlikely that out of the 900 or so that got shipped off to
Gitmo, 10 were actually anti-American before the US invasion.
