I wonder what the passengers were told.

So that's where the Northwest pilots went to? Hmm

How could they "forget"?

ATSB will have someone's guts for gaiters, thats for sure.

Checklists? We don't need no stinkin' checklists!

Dang, they recognized it at about 1000 feet AGL. How long does it take
to lower the gear. I think they had time to continue the approach then
act surprised if someone questions them.

I think there might be a bit of "extraneous" stuff behind this story.

Here's my proposed scenario: It was the 2nd Officer's job to lower
the gear as per the checklist. The PIC has previously had problems
with this particular 2nd Officer. When the gear-up alarm sounded, the
PIC decided that this was the last straw and decided to make an
example of the 2nd Officer by calling a "Go Around" knowing that this
would cook the bozo's goose. Is this plausible, or am I out to lunch?

Maybe if they had a camera in the cockpit ......?

We'd have seen the 2nd Officer getting clipped around the ears.

I believe you're supposed to be stabilized at 1000'. Putting the gear
down would change the trim. That would be an unsafe configuration
approaching minimums. Go-around is the correct procedure.

Which is what they did!
