Dang, they recognized it at about 1000 feet AGL. How long does it take
to lower the gear. I think they had time to continue the approach then
act surprised if someone questions them.

I think there might be a bit of "extraneous" stuff behind this story.
Here's my proposed scenario: It was the 2nd Officer's job to lower
the gear as per the checklist. The PIC has previously had problems
with this particular 2nd Officer. When the gear-up alarm sounded, the
PIC decided that this was the last straw and decided to make an
example of the 2nd Officer by calling a "Go Around" knowing that this
would cook the bozo's goose. Is this plausible, or am I out to lunch?

I believe you're supposed to be stabilized at 1000'. Putting the gear
down would change the trim. That would be an unsafe configuration
approaching minimums. Go-around is the correct procedure.
