Insurance is a bet in risk. Auto insurance is used to covered the
financial impact of an unexpected event. The insurance company
evaluates you based mostly on history. If you rack up tickets, you
pay more for your insurance based on being a higher risk. The
insurance you have does not cover oil changes. If it did, you'd pay
much more for auto insurance.
Health insurance is a cost sharing scheme. The left wants "profit
making" insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. As of
today, privately owned insurance companies have the right to make a
profit. However, if required to cover everybody regardless of health,
and must also pay for routine exams and visits, there is no way to
make a profit. There will be no private insurance companies.
An insurance company cannot charge a person $800 per month for a
policy knowing full well at the time that the insured will require
$250,000 of care in the coming years. That type of structure is no
longer a bet on risk, but an insane cost sharing scheme. You feel
insurance companies are cruel by denying coverage, but there will be
no more insurance companies if government requires companies cover the
full cost of cancer treatment and in exchange want 1 tenth the cost.
That is economic ruin.
On the other hand. If everybody agrees it's no longer insurance, but
a new form of cost sharing, then you'll still be forced to allow the
company to make a profit. If that makes you mad that a company can
make a profit, then everybody is covered by the government. It makes
my skin crawl that my next open heart surgery will be performed by an
SEIU doctor.
Soon those smart enough to be a doctor will decide instead to go to
law school. Pelosi put specific language in the proposed house
healthcare bill that stipulates lawyers fees and charges will not be
restricted. For every doctor, there will be 10 lawyers.
You hate insurance companies...fine, but don't treat them like an
insurance company and expect them to act like a non profit cost
sharing scheme.

Health care should not be exploited for profit. That's about as
immoral as kidnapping someone and holding them for ransom. What
they're doing here is holding your health for ransom.

There is a core mistake in the above, health care is not a part of a
capitalist society. Health care is out side the capitalist
structure. In capitalism you have the right and the expectation that
if you don't like the price of quality you can go to another
provider. That is just not the same as going to a health care
provider.
Doctors, nurses, hospitals and all the other elements in the health
care make up are designed to care for patients whether they are aware
of the provider or not. If you are out cold or just in for a check up
the health care system has to be able to provide what you need. Fees
usually are not negotiated between a patient and a provider, the
patient accepts the fee since the provider has the required skills.
And there is no negotiation about which health care provider to go to
if the patient isn't aware of his surroundings. If you have a stroke
and can't talk, aren't aware you can't negotiate.
There is no place for medicine in capitalism and no capitalism in
health care.
