Hysteria Over Irish Clergy Abuse

HYSTERIA OVER IRISH CLERGY ABUSE
May 20, 2009
After nine years of investigation, Ireland's Commission to
Inquire into Child Abuse has published its findings. More than 30,000
children, most of them delinquents, passed through one or more of Ireland's
Catholic-run institutions from the 1920s through the 1980s.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the report
today:
Reuters is reporting that "Irish Priests Beat, Raped Children,"
yet the report does not justify this wild and irresponsible claim. Four
types of abuse are noted: physical, sexual, neglect and emotional. Physical
abuse includes "being kicked"; neglect includes "inadequate heating"; and
emotional abuse includes "lack of attachment and affection." Not nice, to be
sure, but hardly draconian, especially given the time line: fully 82 percent
of the incidents took place before 1970. As the New York Times noted, "many
of them [are] now more than 70 years old." And quite frankly, corporal
punishment was not exactly unknown in many homes during these times, and
this is doubly true when dealing with miscreants.
Regarding sexual abuse, "kissing," and "non-contact including
voyeurism" (e.g., what it labels as "inappropriate sexual talk") make the
grade as constituting sexual abuse. Moreover, one-third of the cases
involved "inappropriate fondling and contact." None of this is defensible,
but none of it qualifies as rape. Rape, on the other hand, constituted 12
percent of the cases. As for the charge that "Irish Priests" were
responsible, some of the abuse was carried out by lay persons, much of it
was done by Brothers, and about 12 percent of the abusers were priests (most
of whom were not rapists).
The Irish report suffers from conflating minor instances of
abuse with serious ones, thus demeaning the latter. When most people hear of
the term abuse, they do not think about being slapped, being chilly, being
ignored or, for that matter, having someone stare at you in the shower. They
think about rape.
By cheapening rape, the report demeans the big victims. But, of
course, there is a huge market for such distortions, especially when the
accused is the Catholic Church.

I recently stated that the absurd little tosser named Bill Donohue was
always good for bringing Teh Funny. I was wrong. Donohue issued a
statement this week about the recently released report by Ireland's
Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, and it is truly one of the
most breathtakingly vicious things I've seen in a long, long time. It
isn't funny. It isn't a laughing matter at all. And how thoughtful
of IBen/JYoung to post proof of Donohue's depravity in his own
words...
Oh heavens, NO! We wouldn't want to distort the endless history of
Catholic clergy raping and assaulting children around the world and
then having those incidents covered up by the Church leadership.
People might get the wrong idea! And as for all those school and
church figures who merely groped and fondled the kids, you wouldn't
want to damage their self-esteem by lumping them in with rapists.
And what about those rapes? It only happened to 128 girls, after
all. Let's talk about physical punishment. As Donohue noted,
physical punishment wasn't unheard of from the 1920s to the 1970s. No
big deal, right? Well, that depends. From the report:
"Forty one (41) witnesses reported being forced to eat,
frequently
by having their heads held and mouths pried open. Seven (7)
witnesses reported being beaten for refusing to eat and eight
others reported being physically forced to eat regurgitated
food."
I'm pretty sure that forcing a child to eat vomit would have been
frowned upon, even in the days when stern discipline prevailed,
pre-1980.
PZ Myers says it better than I can:
"I also don't buy the excuse that this was done in the past and
is
irrelevant today. Donohue makes it relevant, acting as he does
now as the embodiment of the mindset that allowed these
nightmarish conditions to exist."
Bill Donohue sought to explain away the crimes of his church, and for
that he deserves everlasting scorn.

Shall I accuse all Communists of the atrocities committed by the Khmer
Rouge? Of course not! I won't even accuse all Leftists of explaining
away the killing fields the way Noam Chomsky did. [Reference:
_Cambodia Year Zero_ by Francois Ponchaud]
And so leftists like Keegan, to whom I am following up, are presumed
innocent of whitewashing the Khmer Rouge (at least until proven
guilty) even though Keegan has not extended a similar presumption to
me wrt molestations by Catholic clergy.
...who has made it abundantly clear that he is in favor of drastically
punishing guilty clergy, not just civilly but also ecclesiastically.
A year in sackcloth and ashes might actually be a more severe penance
than imprisonment, since some of the guilty party might actually enjoy
being sodomized in prison.
I'm curious to know why you've repeatedly ducked, deleted, or
otherwise run away from my questions about YOUR attitude towards
sexual abuse. Another thread, where you have REPEATEDLY done this, is
"U.S. Officials Admitted that Boys Were Sodomized In Iraq Prison",
crossposted to talk.abortion, alt.abortion, and talk.politics.misc
Could it be that in the past, you've seduced boys, perhaps even
pressured them to submit to sodomy by you, and are now indulging in
sleazy innuendo about me in the hope that at some point, I will get
tired of setting the record straight, and then you can assuage your
guilty conscience by telling yourself that even I stopped denouncing
such behavior?
If so, it will be the first sign I have ever had that you even HAVE a
conscience.
Lots of them would; the deciding factor is who the local priest is and
how much they trust him.
I, for one, would trust every leftist I know personally to go camping
with my children overnight. Of course, I would also make sure that
either they or some counselors were competent outdoors[wo]men, quite
unlike the incompetent women who ran the Brownie camp where I sent my
oldest daughter when she was in second grade.
Not a single one knew how to build a fire as well as my daughter
already could.
And by the way, one of them had been her mildly abusive first grade
teacher in a Catholic school with a nun as a principal, but she had
mellowed towards my daughter by then.

church. And, as the report noted, those corrupt church officials
didn't protect lay people. Those crimes were reported to the police.
They protected the church people.

No, THE CHURCH. The religious order that ran the juvenile centers,
the Christian Brothers, successfully sued to have individual names of
abusers stricken from the report. Furthermore, many of the priests
and nuns who participated in the abuse were transferred to other
parishes, not only in Ireland but other countries around the world,
including the U.S.
http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=2&aid=164045
In the same way that the RCC conspired to cover up the crimes of its
priests regarding the sexual abuse of children, it conspired to cover
