How do I learn the individual tobaccos?

Anonymous Wrote:

Getting back to tobaccoreviews.com, and reading about blends, how can
I experience individual tobaccos themselves? Virginia, perique,
latakia, burley?

Experienced guys talk about the blends, but how do you know how to
pick out the individuals?

Hi Mitch,
Your question is both difficult and simple to answer. The answer is as
subjective as the reviews you read on tobaccoreviews. I have been
smoking a pipe for ONLY 6 years. It took me a long time to even figure
out HOW to smoke a pipe...or how I should smoke a pipe. There are many
great joys that can be had from smoking a pipe. The longer you smoke a
pipe, the easier it becomes to duplicate a particular smoking
experience.
With the number of tobaccos available, it is easy to go into
information overload. I suggest you buy at least 100gram or 4 oz
samples of different tobaccos to try, and as many as you can afford to
buy. Also invest in small 4oz mason jars, as they are more reliable
for keeping tobacco in a new state. An open tin is probably the worst
way to long term store tobacco. Give each blend a fair shake. As you
progress in you knowledge of how to smoke a pipe, you palate will
change. What you like at any given time will change. Having many
varieties to choose from will help you drill down to what you prefer.
There are basically 4 types of tobacco. Aromatics, these can be
anything from heavily cased cavendish/burley blends, to lighter cased
VA's. VA's, including VA blends containing Perique. Burly blends, and
English blends containing Latakia and Orientals. There are variations
of each, many burly blends can contain VA's. Many VA blends contain
burley, English blends can contain both, but are noted in just about
always having an amount of Latakia.
Try many of each. I have found that each blend I have ever sampled
has it's own merits. From here you can decide what your favorites are.
As far as tobacco reviews go, your mileage WILL vary from the
experiences of other smokers. Everyone from experienced 20 and 30 year
veterans of the pipe, to middle of the road guys like me, to newbies
like yourself. We all like different things, my greatest joy so far in
the world of pipe smoking has been one of discovery. Trying new blends
remains the most fun. It can get expensive, but to me it is very
rewarding. There was a period of about 2 years where I didn't touch an
english blend, I have recently started revisiting some of the blends I
have had cellared for those 2 years. My palate has changed, the
tobacco has some age on it, I find most of them simply wonderful. As I
do my PS cube cut that I smoke everyday. It is a Burley blend with
VA's and lightly cased for aroma and flavor.
Slow down, enjoy and explore each and everybowl you smoke. You will
find that small changes made to HOW you smoke can have effects on what
you experience from each blend. Welcome to the world of pipe smoking.
It is best travelled with a pipe in hand, tobacco lit and slowly
smoked, savor every bowl you smoke as a mile travelled on your
journey. You won't regret it.

I agree with everything said above. That said, if you're set on
trying specific strains of tobacco, McClellands has some blending
tobaccos you can buy in tins. Also, I'd be willing to bet that C&D
would be happy to sell you an few ounces of any thing that have on
hand.

I don't think that you'd want to smoke Latakia or
Perique on their own, they're pretty overwhelming.
When used in a blend, their characteristics,
however, can't be missed. Any "English" blend will
have varying amounts of Latakia - you won't miss
it, and AFAIC, ESCUDO is the Virginia/Perique
against which all others are measured.

There are any number of straight Virginias
available, but they will all be different because
of the way they are processed: stoved, pressed
into flakes and so on. Sml. Gawith and Gawith and
Hoggarth have lots of high-quality straight
Virginias to offer, not to mention blends with
Latakia.

I'm not much of a burley guy (except when it's
pressed into a flake in Orlik's GOLDEN SLICED), so
I'll let others comment.

Just keep buying small amounts of different
tobaccos and soon your palate will become
educated...

Oh, wow. I was going to order some, but on the package it says
"Tobacco seriously damages health."

Forget it.

Now to find that marriage license and the kids' birth certificates.
I'm sure they have the same warnings, right?

Well, you seem to know what you're talking about.

I couldn't take any more reading without smoking, so I'm on my second
small bowl of Revelation. i love it. My tongue loves it. It's so
mellow. Reviewers seem to love it..calling it a very good "drugstore"
blend. Although, it was out of stock for so long when I bought it,
there was cwertainly no drugstore here that sold it. :)

So checking reviews: Hal O the Wynd? Good?
