Niners Playoff Bound in 09 Says Banks

The 49′ers have a fan when it comes to expectations for 2009, as
SI.com writer Don Banks has thrown it out there that the Niners are
headed for...(gulp!) the postseason!
Yes, Banks wrote recently that the Niners will make it to the dance,
somewhat based on their very solid 5-2 wrap up of the 2008 season.
Here's what Banks had to write about a postseason trip for San Fran:
San Francisco - The 49ers finished the season at 5-2 in their last
seven games under interim head coach Mike Singletary, and that's
almost always going to earn you chic-pick, team-on-the-rise status
heading into the following season. But there is something about
Singletary's old-school approach that seems to be exactly what the
lackadaisical 49ers have lacked in recent years. He doesn't seem to
suffer fools or sloppiness too well, and those are two things that
have not been in short supply in San Francisco for a while now.
Whether or not the 49ers have enough quality quarterbacking to make
their first playoff appearance since 2002 remains a question, but
let's not lose sight of something here. The NFC West's past three
champions have gone 9-7 (Arizona in 2008), 10-6 and 9-7 (Seattle in
2007 and 2006), so it's not going to take a quantum leap for San
Francisco (7-9 last year) to scale that particular mountain.

I hope he's right but the '9ers were a "trendy" pick in 2007
and went right down the tubes with Nolan et al. So even
though I'm hopeful the team has turned a corner with
Sing (and Jed in place of his dad) I'm not getting excited
until I see it happen on the field in the regular season. The
one thing he's definitely right about is that the '9ers are in
a weak division ripe for the picking if they can take advantage.

We can only hope. Things at least seem to be heading in the right
direction. With papa York out of the picture hopefully and Jed's
attidute ( and maybe some advice from Uncle Eddie) we will see.
