Laser Eye Surgery anyone??

On Thu, 14 May 2009 21:49:05 -0700, "BQ" <...@noshaw.ca

Just had my consultation and booked my surgery. I know Steve (Nuk) had this
done but wondered if anyone else had it done and can give me some opinions.
I am not doing the PRK but the custom wavemount surgery, mainly cause I
don't have a week to be off for recovery. It is more expensive than I
thought, but not needing glasses for every stinking thing, no more contact
and solutions and all that - I think it will be worth it.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Husband had PRK and liked it. It took a few days to recover, had to
use eye drops for about a month, but it worked out very well for him
and he's had no trouble for the past five and a half years.

He had a very strong prescription and had been wearing glasses since
about 4 years old.

I hope yours goes well and you love the results (no more foggy glasses
in the rain!).

I got the "No Touch" procedure done at London Optical about ten years
ago. It was way more expensive, hurt like hell for days, but it was
totally worth it to be free of contacts or glasses. Unfortunately, now
that I'm getting older, I'll be needing reading glasses pretty soon.

I had PRK two years ago, I think, at age 40 -- one of the best gifts I
ever gave myself. The freedom and convenience, not to mention the
ability to put on sunglasses, is fantastic. It's great for sports (no
more switching between glasses and contacts), and just for being able
to maneuver -- it is amazing how much time one saves not squinting,
trying to find the specs.

I expect that Lasik will be more comfortable than my experience, which
was an itchy few days of regeneration.

One thing I don't understand about laser eye surgery: what
happens if your eyes continue to get worse after you have
the surgery? Doesn't this mean that, in a couple of years,
you might be wearing glasses again or have to undergo the
procedure again?

What they do is sculpt the lens with a laser. You do need a thick enough
lens in order to do that, and they probably tested for that. The worse your
script (coke-bottles), the more deeper sculpting/compensating is needed.
However, newer (last 3 years) software that guides the laser may allow
thinner-lensed people with very bad scripts to get it done today.

Depending on your age, if you are in your 30s, your eye will change shape
again and more in the future and if you've already skinned your lens to the
minimum, then you're back to glasses in the future (wasn't that a movie?).

There were a lot of horror stories about the earlier laser surgeries (and
even some more recent ones), so do your homework.

I remember a Chinese method taught to school children to eliminate the need
for glasses: Your hands cover your eyes, palm flat on either side of your
nose, pressing and rotating your inner palms around the orbital bone in
circles. Careful not to put any pressure or touch your eye at all.
Does it work? Can't say. I do it... But I already have German shepherd (who
would probably love to leave me blind in the middle of a six-lane
intersection...)

Check out Coal Harbour - they are the place laser eye surgeons go for
*their* eye surgery. I went with them last year and it was
fantastic. Absolutely the best thing (apart from marrying my wife, of
course!) I've ever done for myself. Coal Harbour has offices in
Victoria for the pre- and post-surgery check ups, but you have to go
to Van for the actual surgery. Still, they are about 1200 cheaper
than Clearly Lasik and I just really liked them a lot better. I
must've talked to about 6 or 7 clinics before I went with them, and
was very glad I did.

Thanks Fearsome, if I had time on my side I would check them out, but I have
no time off available after June so unless I want to put this off until
September I have to go locally. But thank you! I want to get this done
before I change my mind as I am a 'tad' squeamish when it comes to anything
to do with eyes.

Whatever you do, and wherever you do it, you will not regret getting
it done. It's been a year, and I still feel like the bionic man.

Well, that assumes there will be no complications. My brother - a

Yep, for sure. I had a long talk with an eye surgeon in Taiwan
(Stanford trained) when I lived there. He said that up until about
four years ago he would discourage people from getting laser surgery,
but recently he had become a convert. He felt that the technology had
changed sufficiently to say that it had a good long term prognosis.

Also, Coal Harbour has a 'life time warranty' of touch-ups should any
be needed in the future, something that Clearly Lasik charges extra
for after the first year.

but isn't the guy who own coal harbour, opened and closed several laser eye
surgery places, and never fullfilled his past patients from his other
places?

That's sweet. When I went in they gave me the price which included
touch ups for the first year, then it was going to be $500/eye/time.
I said, "no thanks." Glad that they've changed that policy. Good
luck, Lisa!
