Test strips & use by date

On Fri, 06 Nov 2009 03:04:47 GMT, BessieBee <...@fakeaddress.com

First, let me apologize for a question that I'm sure has been covered,
probably multiple times, but I can't find any posts still online...

I recently found a "lost" stash of test strips for my One Touch Ultra
Mini. I found 3 bottles so now have a total of 75 strips, all of
which have an expiration date of last month: October 2009.

Common sense (and my ever shrinking wallet) tell me that I should be
able to use the strips with no problem. I test a minimum of 3x per
day so they should last me almost a month.

I've been having a difficult time in the past few months maintaining
decent control and don't want to screw things up with strips that
would be way off, but on the other hand, finances dictate that every
nickel be squeezed until the buffalo screams and finding those "lost"
strips at the back of my kitchen cupboard was kind of like Christmas
morning. :-0

Thanks for any info!

Test against known good equipment and make adjustments accordingly.

If they're only a month out of date I wouldn't worry a whole lot
about it. And since you'll likely use them up in about 25 days,
the difficulty won't last long.

If you continue to worry about this, perhaps you'd consider
buying enough new strips so that one of the readings you
get per day is on the new ones. After a few days you should
have a pretty good handle on how accurate the old strips are.

Please treat this like a logic problem.

I seriously doubt any strips are going to deteriorate within 5 days of the
use by date. Now if it was milk...

I would only discontinue if the strips were reading way less or way more
than my usual numbers.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I'm using the expired strips with
no apparent deviation from the "current" ones. I love little
surprises like finding 3 vials of test strips hiding in the back of my
kitchen cupboard! :-)

For those that asked (and those that didn't) I'm type 2 on insulin.
Recently developed health concerns - in addition to diabetes - have
complicated matters and are making my sugar control a battle I haven't
had to deal with before now. It seems I learn something new every
day.

I used to read ASD daily, but stopped when I got tired of slogging
through far too much garbage that seemed to amount to nothing more
than childish name calling. I don't have the time or temperament -
mostly temperament - to deal with all the crap. I'm returning now
with a paid version of Agent and have spent some time going through
this group kill filing the posters that seem to have far too much time
on their hands.

Anyway, I appreciate the test strip answers and I will probably
retreat back into lurk mode. Thanks for all you help!

imo October was only last month. If they were a year past expiration

of strips, I for sure would use them. I would use the test solution to
see if they are in range

I have used old strips before myself. I had to change the date on my
tester because it refused to use dated strips. Now that is a serious way
for the company to get you to my new strips.

And a very valid opinion it is!
