Re: Americanisms

Well no, I asserted the exact opposite, but if that's wrong then it is
wrong.

I used to think it was "Trail", then I saw an interview (many years ago
now) on TV with an Australian ex-soldier who actually fought on it, and he
was quite insistent about what *they* called it and was not happy about
the subsequent distortion into "Trail".

A lot of people these days seem to lay a lot of credence to what those
old diggers did and now say, and this bloke's opinion was good enough for
me when compared to the (obvious) later revisions made in our ever more
"Americanized" culture in this country.

IIRC "Trail" was used almost universally ~10-20 years ago, now more and
more are using "Track", perhaps for the reasons I have already outlined.

I was originally trail about the same time, then switched to track, probably
as a result of the push that resulted from what you saw, though I don't
remember it.

Then I got pulled up by an Army chappie when I was in a tri-Service
environment on a posting and got the AWMM definition.

In general, though, I get as cranky as all hell (not as "all get-out") with
imported colloquialisms but console myself that the Brits of Caesar's time
would have had the same issues of cultural dominance. It has always been
so, unfortunately.

Yep, but we all have the choice to push back against the overt (and
covert) changes which essentially make us more like someone else - and
with all the current era hoo-haa about "Respecting" those who served in
our armed forces this is one particular instance where people can
demonstrate it rather than just accepting a distortion.

what a crock of shite!

Language has to be dynamic or it withers and dies.

Cunnian sceawian pes = Try reading this (probably)
and both sentences are written in ENGLISH!

in other words the language has radically changed
and it changed because of external influences
and now magically you want to stop that change
because you are somehow (ridiculously IMO)
offended because of the non-difference of Track & Trail

Myself I abhor the use of GET being used incorrectly
all the time however just by virtue of most people
using it most times then you must accept that

You GET the ball, You GOT the ball, You HAVE the Ball
but you never HAVE GOT the ball

Of course not, it should be "have gotten".
