The fascination with Antioch

On Fri, 21 Aug 2009 22:46:32 EDT, Mark Roberts <...@gmail.com

So what is it with our local radio and TV stations about Antioch?

KTVU's started doing a "pinpoint forecast" each night on the Ten
O'Clock News featuring a Bay Area city. It seems that, one time out
of three, Antioch is the featured city. (Livermore seems to come in
second place.) What, there's no weather anywhere else in the Bay
Area? At least cover Cupertino for a change of pace, KTVU.

And then there was an incident this morning on Highway 4 in
Antioch where police blocked a lane as a crime scene. Yes,
it was a big traffic tie-up. But KCBS went on and on
about it. Was there nothing else in traffic this morning?
Yes, it should have gotten some coverage, but in *every* traffic
report? It's not as if Highway 4 is a central artery in the Bay
Area; it's not nearly as critical as the bridges, for example.

I never thought Antioch would be considered exotic, but I guess our
Bay Area broadcast stations believe otherwise!

I hope you're not an assignment editor:-) How ironic that just a few days
after you posted that, Antioch exploded as the center of media attention in
the BA and nationally.

Hah, right, I'd forgotten about Mark's comment!

I guess the local stations were prescient...

I thought about that today in travels to and from Sacramento and
hearing the stories. I'm still not sure how much it has to do with
KTVU's fascination with having "pinpoint forecasts" featuring
Antioch.

Maybe someone at KTVU is reading -- in the last few days, other
cities have been the focus of the pinpoint forecasts, and there's
been other breathlessness about how high temperatures go up as you
go east from San Francisco to Oakland to Walnut Creek to - yes -
Antioch.
